how to dress for a ball 101

Not that all of us will necessarily be attending a gala in the near future, but chances are that eventually, you'll have to go to some sort of formal function, be it a wedding, anniversary, prom, etc. While I was searching for formal dresses, I stumbled across this monstrousity:

My only advice is to PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF PEPTO BISMAL POOFY FREAKISH FROCKS do not go the outdated princess route, you will regret it. Opt instead for something less horrendous and more chic. My preference is fitted corset high waisted dresses with a full skirt, which look best on my frame. If I could pull off a sexy pencil body con type dress, I certainly would. However, no hips+ squarish frame=a definate no go son.
So here are my current options, if you guys could leave me a message ASAP with your preference I would be the happiest girl north of the border. Here are the three finalists, in no particular order:

1)

2)

3)

I'm leaning towards #2 for three reasons. It's a lovely democratic blue, its embellishments give it a bit of edge, and its on sale for $40. Vote how you wish though! Thanks lovelies.

hi dear, my choice would have to be the first one (read: the read one. not that princess peach-y thing way up. though it would be hilarious if i saw anyone wearing this monster :) but if you like the blue one better, go for that. do you have a blazer or anything to wear with the dress? if so, what color? might help you decide...

the midnight blue for sure.
would look great on you! if you get it post some pics, yeah?

the first or the second! i absolutely LOVE the shape. and i have the exact same body type as you, where are they from?
i like the coral color because the mono-hue directs attention to the interesting cut, but if you like the blue that's great too!

the blue cause its still sexy without drawing tooo much attention to yourself!!

The third one is more traditional ... I say go for the 2nd one ... I like the blue, as you point out - it's very Dem of you! But I don't know if the back is a little too sexy? But it depends what type of ball you're going to/what type of people you're going to be hobnobing with. But ... I say, go for the blue.

2nd one, all the way
the third one is trendy and cheap looking, the first one somewhat plain

The first or second - the cut out back is super hot!

Though turning up in the pink monstrosity would be so hilarious it would almost be worth it... That's if you could get it on without vomiting :)

I vote for #2 because the color rocks and you're right, the embellishments add the perfect edge.

NUMBER 2!! i like the first one also, but it looks a bit rocker for a presidential inauguration. i think #2 is the perfect mix of classy and chic, but still keeps a bit of an edge.

the blue one! defenitely!!!!

i think the red one is the prettiest because its simple + the embellishments dont take away from the interesting corset shape. plus i think red looks so great on pretty much anyone

I really like one and two. They both have really pretty colors and I like the embellishment on the blue one. it adds some nice eye interest.

I like the second dress best but I am afraid that it might not be conservative enough for an inauguration ball...you're going to be showing legs, back and, potentially, bust.

Unless of course its the young peoples' ball. in that case, let it loose!
