Aftermath

Hello my darlings, I've missed you all! Ok, well, unfortunately, I'm afraid I don't have much good news to share. I got to D.C. on Saturday night at around 2:30 a.m., woke up at 7 a.m., went downtown to see the "We are One" concert and literally slept on a box on the ground near the reflecting pool. We had to stand waiting that day for about four hours to not lose our spot among a nearly million strong crowd. Not to mention, it was cold. I'm Canadian, and I'm telling you, it was COLD in D.C. all week. So the next day we went to get tickets for the Aretha Franklin concert that they were supposed to give out at 4 p.m. After about two hours of waiting in line, we were informed that they had, on a whim, decided to give them out at 5 a.m. that day instead, despite official info to the contrary. Balls. Ok, so then we walk around and go back to the hotel. On the day of the inauguration, we woke up at 4:30 a.m. and took the shuttle to the most packed subway station I've ever seen, at 5 a.m.! We get downtown, walk forever and manage to find a relatively close spot and I am forced to, once again, sleep on the ground on a garbage bag this time. After nearly losing a few little toes in the cold, we make our way back to the hotel for the ball(s) that night. We get all done up, hair, make-up, the works, and take the subway to the Marriot. As we step out in our ballgowns and tuxes, the first thing we see is a sign that read this:

The American Music Inaugural balls have been cancelled.

That's it. The company had decided two hours prior to the event that the ticket sales were too low and cancelled and checked out of the hotel to avoid people arriving. We got a contact number and called and the lady says, "no that's just a rumour", and then "call me back in 15 minutes". Apparently it was so last minute that some of the organizers were unaware. So professional. You can probably imagine, since I had been looking forward to having one of the best nights of my life how disappointed we were. The only thing that they left was the website address, which they basically closed down right away. You can check it out here:

http://www.americanmusicinauguralballs.com/

Maybe if somebody can actually contact the company, they could tell them that cancellation has two ls.

So we ended up being out of over $2000 and shelling out another $800 to not have to go home as we were. I think the saddest thing was seeing a group of older black women climb excitedly out of their rented limo and crying after a hotel staff member told them the bad news. Broke my heart.

In all, I was usually dirty, always cold, sometimes ripped off. And I had the most wonderful time. The crowd, the generousity, the emotion, the patriotism, it was the most lovely experience I've ever had. I made great friends and was able to see people in the best light possible. I met people from Amsterdam, Paris, Alaska, and Hawaii. The crappiness of it will pass but I was fortunate enough to see the first BIRACIAL president sworn in, and isn't that all that matters?

We met these sweet old women who were supposed to attend the same ball as us and after sharing hugs and stories, one of them looked at me and told me, "Please, dear, don't let disappointment ruin the goodness of the day." So true.

I apologize in advance to everyone who was hoping for celebrity gossip or impressive photos, I hope you still enjoy them. Oh, and Canada, please put a Target and a Cheesecake Factory next door to me when you get the chance.

...and the cheese stands alone.

Seriously, where the eff have all of you gone? I swear if you guys keep being all silent I WILL be forced the record my own rendition of "all by myself" and post it. Muahahaha. Whateves, anywho, it looks like my dress won't arrive in time and so I made a stop at BCBG tonight and got a replacement. It is GORGEOUS, it's from their runway collection, and I'm not going to show you until after I get back. That's what you get for being lurkers, heehee. I also got my hair fixed, but because it's still in that awkward just dyed phase I pulled it up for a future unveiling.

So this guy yesterday in my discussion group comes up to my table, puts all his books etc. over my stuff, grabs a new chair and basically forces me to switch to another table. I learned two things from this, a) I am literally invisible to all mens, and therefore this interaction makes perfect sense, and b) I have zero backbone. Seriously, who not only moves but says sorry (by habit) to the a$$hole making them move as they get up? argh, I need to be more Sasha Fierce.

and the winner is....

Let me just say, I have maybe the best readers EVER. You guys really helped me out with the whole dress dilemma. I ended up going with what the majority of you voted for...

#2. One lovely and honest reader did make the good point that the dress itself may be too showy for a ball. After all, it's above the knee, it has an open back, and the corset top is a little risque. I took this into account when I decided to pair the dress with

"velvet feel" black opaque tights,

This lovely plaid trench coat,
And a cute pair of leather gloves with zippers to add a little edge. Hopefully my additions will eliminate the sleaze factor a little! I haven't forgotten about shoes, in case you're wondering, I'm just currently stumped on which to wear. I have one pair of Oh Deer Loub knockoffs that would be great, but the thought of running around in heels that are horrendously uncomfortable gives me shivers. So if anybody has any suggestions shoe wise, holler at your girl. Ciao xxoo.

pretty and ugly dresses(you can decide what is what!)

Yahoo!!!! I got so excited when the mailman came to deliver a package today I think he might never come back. Let's just say the combination of squeals, shrieks, and repetitive OMGs made him look at me like I was a five-eyed monster. Inside the tightly sealed bag was this beauty:

my lovely new Rojas dress. I'm building up quite a collection of Rojas pieces, actually. They're just so well made their stuff is irresistible. If you don't know the brand, check it out on http://www.karmaloop.com/, http://www.revolveclothing.com/, http://www.shopnastygal.com/, http://www.pixiemarket.com/, and lots of other places. I scored this $100 dress for a measly $30 on a Karmaloop during a 4 hour 70% off sale.
Ok, ok, so you know that picture below of the ugly princess dress? I found it on this site called http://www.uglydresses.com/. It's pretty much the most awesome site in the universe. Here are some of my fav finds:
And every princess needs a pair of glass, err, maxi pad slippers!

Thank you http://www.uglydresses.com/ for making my life. Oh! and you guys have been super so far but if you haven't voted yet, please help me pick out my ball dress! I will probably decide tomorrow depending on the results. ciao peeps. xx00.

how to dress for a ball 101

Not that all of us will necessarily be attending a gala in the near future, but chances are that eventually, you'll have to go to some sort of formal function, be it a wedding, anniversary, prom, etc. While I was searching for formal dresses, I stumbled across this monstrousity:

My only advice is to PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF PEPTO BISMAL POOFY FREAKISH FROCKS do not go the outdated princess route, you will regret it. Opt instead for something less horrendous and more chic. My preference is fitted corset high waisted dresses with a full skirt, which look best on my frame. If I could pull off a sexy pencil body con type dress, I certainly would. However, no hips+ squarish frame=a definate no go son.
So here are my current options, if you guys could leave me a message ASAP with your preference I would be the happiest girl north of the border. Here are the three finalists, in no particular order:

1)

2)

3)

I'm leaning towards #2 for three reasons. It's a lovely democratic blue, its embellishments give it a bit of edge, and its on sale for $40. Vote how you wish though! Thanks lovelies.

"why are you dressed up?"

If I hear that one more time today, I swear I'm going to scream. I apologize that I left my skinny jeans and abercrombie pullover in my closet today. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with casual dressing, but can't I just care how I look without being perceived as being high-maintenance or odd? To be honest, I didn't even think I WAS dressed up today. But every person that saw me asked me the dreaded question. Can y'all relate to this? Well I'll show you what I wore and let you be the judge.

cheapest outfit ever!!

what I'm wearing:
skirt worn as a dress: stolen from a bin of would be donated things from my sister
belt: vintage
tights: walmart
shoes: gojane
cozy lovely cape cardigan: old navy

I'm going to Washington, D.C. in a couple of weeks for the presidential inauguration and I am so excited because a) hello, its a moment in history, and b)I get to see some of my long lost family, one of whom gets to be Obama's guest of honour!!! so amazing. Anyways, even though I have dresses, I don't feel like any of them are special enough for the occasion and want to purchase a new one. So I NEED you guys to help dress me for whatever ball/gala I go to!!! I'll show you the current options in an upcoming post. Ciao pretties xxoo.
